I would like to get into the printing of small business cards. Can anyone inform me of which tools are necessary to begin? I am aware of Microsoft Word and Adobe illustrator are the best software for this kind of work.

Word is HORRRRIBBBLLEEE!!! Yes, there is a reason why it’s all in caps. Word is not good for anything relating to design. I would recommend Adobe Acrobat, Illustrator and Photoshop. If clients send items in a PDF (which is very global) then you can open it with Acrobat. For your sake you need to know proper printing procedures as well (CMYK modes, offset and digital terminology, paper types, varnish, spot, process, etc.). Even if you don’t print it, you knowing what the customer is talking about will give them the confidence in working with you.
I would also check into preflight/prepress software.
